Hot Shot

Hot Shot

This is a short story that started a while ago in Erma's head. It started from a prompt and got rattled around in her brain.

She wrote it, lost it, remembered it, and finally... re-wrote it. So here it is, in it's final form.

Hot Shot

by Erma

As Jade stood there looking down the barrel of this shiny silver gun that appeared very bright in the sunshine that filled this forest he had taken her to, all she could think about was how badly this man had hurt her and how he had betrayed her so why should she back down? If he did kill her like he is claiming, then she would not have her mom constantly looking over her shoulder because of her depression. She WAS legally 18 so it was stupid that her mom had to keep taking care of her. So she stood tall and stood her ground.

As his hand drew closer to the trigger that sat so perfectly still in the gun… BUT WAIT!!! It wasn’t sitting still. It was shaking. Was he nervous or scared or maybe even regretful? Nevertheless, his hand WAS moving closer to that trigger. Jade closed her eyes to wait for the shot. Suddenly there was a loud bang that rang in her ears. As she tried to open her eyes she was shocked to see that there was no longer a gun aimed at her instead there was something else. A familiar face standing where the gun was just seconds before that and a loud yelling that Jade no longer wanted to hear. It was the sound of his cries of pain and torture from where he was just shot in the leg. She then realized who it was standing in front of her.

“DADDY!” Jade cried with all the strength she had left and then collapsed into his protective arms for she was too exhausted to stand and knew she was safe with him. There was a loud sigh of relief from both of them as they stood there. In her head, all she could think was how horrible her boyfriend had treated her, how he had abused her for 3 whole years now, how he had hit her with belts, and about how her dad had caught on and he had made her admit it to him but he did not tell mom because mom would have locked her in her room and that would have made this worse and now here he was, Her daddy had just saved her from him. Then she dialed 911.

“You call yourself human Jed?” Jade asked a few moments after she handed the phone to her dad and he began to speak with the operator. There was a long silence before anyone spoke again.

“Least I did not actually shoot you unlike your dad Mr. Vernon over here.”

“Well if you had not beat me up all those years then maybe he would not have had to!”

“I beat you all those years because you would not listen!” Jed yelled back

“Is it not true that you literally had a gun pointed at my head, ready to shoot?” I questioned.

“I did, but that is not the point” Jed protested

“I think it is!” A male voice boomed as a cop approached from around the corner of the house.

“Why are you coming from over there instead of pulling up with your sirens on and your lights on?” Jed asked.

“Because I asked him too” Mr. Vernon perked up. ”that way you would admit to what you have done to my daughter.”

“I beat you all those years because you would not listen! Is it not true that you literally had a gun pointed at my head, ready to shoot? I did, but that is not the point” repeated a voice recorder.

“ And it worked. You just admitted to it all!” The cop bragged.
