Vicious Spring

Short stories written by 3 members of the same family, showcasing how people raised close, can still have such vastly different takes on the same prompts

The spring was supposed to be beautiful, not painful. It was supposed to be a nice temperature, not this killer heat that made it feel like your face would melt off. Daisy looked up the stone path and took a deep breath. She could feel herself swallow, it felt as if her spit traveled all the way down to her stomach. The meander of the path was dark and creepy. Daisy slowly looked at her feet. She should be moving the other way, running as fast as she can. She willed her feet to work but it was as if the vine tendrils were holding her feet down. Then as if her brain finally connected her feet started moving. Faster and faster running down the path. Daisy happened to look to her left where a wolf was standing. It made her run faster. After a while she stopped to listen, she couldn’t hear the man that had stalked her into the forest in the first place. He had looked at her as if she were a piece of meat he could devour. She started running again, this path had to lead somewhere. She saw a river, the water was full of rapids but there was a house on the other side if she could just get across she could get help. Daisy took a step into the water it was freezing but she pushed through. The water was strong but she trudged on. She was halfway across when her foot slipped. Daisy fell, her head hit a rock. She would defiantly feel that later. She got back on her feet and slowly took a few more steps. There wasn’t much farther for her to go. Daisy stepped right into a hole she could feel her ankle snap, and she fell hitting her head again. This time she didn’t feel anything, her last breath bubbled to the surface.
Here is our prompt today:
Fill in the blanks.
Fill in the blanks with one of the
words here – or something else entirely! – and write the story. Use a different word and write a different story.
“Hey, take it easy.”
“Don’t tell me to take it easy!
Would you be able to take it easy if your _______ was _______?
Mother, Boyfriend, evil, gorgeous,
dead, missing, psychologist
Taking this to another level, I am
adding that all people involved will have names that begin with the same
letter. In this case, I was struck with the idea that they will all start with
“M”
“Hey, take it easy.”
“Don’t tell me to take it easy!
Would you be able to take it easy if your psychologist was evil?”
“Well….. I don’t have a
psychologist so…..”
“Oh, shut up.”
God that boy annoys me. How could
that…. That…. Crazy, annoying, petulant, CHILD be the man that I love? Why do I
love him so much when he is so darn annoying in times like this? Does he not
understand WHY this is so overly concerning to me?
“Jeeze Marina, I think you are
over-reacting on this one. Do you really think Dr. Mario is evil?” Markus says
with an exacerbated sigh.
I almost scream at him but control
my voice because we are in public instead of back at the apartment. “You were
not there! I am SURE that Dr. Mario is evil. I just can’t prove at this second.
Doing so would ruin everything! I mean, yeah, it would help things when it
comes to HIM, but proving it would put our lives and everything we have worked
for……” I leave the thought hanging.
“So the only proof you have would
connect you to him and reveal yourself? Are you sure of that?” Markus looks at
me with a quizzical look in his eyes that hides the passion for the subject
of….. me.
“YES! Because the only reason that
I know anything is because he was… shall we say ‘working’ and I was…. Arriving
at that time. I saw him changing so he could blend into the crowd, just as he
saw me changing so that I could step in to help” MAN! There are too many people
around! I feel like I must speak in code!
“Marina. On a side note…. How the
HECK do you change anyway? I just always assumed tha…..”
“NOT THE POINT! MARKUS!” I say
in a harsh whisper. “We do NOT need to go down that road. You know what
happened last time! You made me ‘demonstrate’ and we ended up in bed all day
and the bank got robbed down the street! How is THAT helpful to the town?”
Markus looks at me with a sly look
and a pleased smile “Well it sure made ME feel happy and safe…” The look of
lust in his eyes could be seen by NASA it was so clear!
“Going down the wrong road right
now dear” I almost giggle. “BACK to the matter at hand. What am I going to do?
I cannot keep seeing him every week! Especially since he knows who I am as
well. I just CAN’T! And then what am I going to do? I don’t know of any other
therapist taking in people right now…. At least not any that have a rep for not
spilling the beans when they hear about what I do…”
“You could….. talk to me ya know…”
Markus says quietly, a look of utter betrayal edging on his face.
“Oh, sweetie. I know I can. But
however, you know….. you don’t have the schooling to help me work out all the
in’s and out’s…. and I definitely can’t talk about YOU and our….. experiences.”
I drop my voice to almost a whisper. “Some of which would just cause you to try
to recreate them instead of helping understand anything.” I am rewarded with a
wink from the crazy sex freak across the table from me.
“Ok… ok…. So let’s think about
this.” Markus replies as he finally starts to take this seriously. “Are you in
need of a new therapist RIGHT now? Or can we do some research and take some
time?”
“While I am worried about going
back to him, I am more worried about him knowing and deciding that my secret is
a tool to use against me!” I look around, feeling shy suddenly.
And there is a good reason. Dr. Mario
is crossing the street and his eyes have LOCKED with mine. I don’t see any sign
of anger or malice though.
“Shit”
“Marina,” He says in a bright clear
voice “I only will bother you for a moment.”
“Dr. Mario. Good to see you out of
the office! May I buy you some coffee?” I push myself to smile and act as if
this is normal for us as to not raise suspicion.
“No thank you.” Dr. Mario says with
a small, lopsided grin. “I will make this short and sweet. As your therapist, I
want you to know that everything you tell me is confidential. Even what happens
OUTSIDE my office.” As his eyes dart around the small cafĂ©, I quickly make eye
contact with Markus as if to say that I am unsure how to proceed.
“Moving forward, I will let you
know that as long as your biggest enemy is not the topic of conversation, I
don’t see a problem continuing our arrangement. I won’t let our…… knowledge….
Effect your therapy. Unless you do not feel comfortable. I know you have your
work and I have mine. Does this seem….. workable to you?”
“Ummm….
Can I get back to you about that?” I am genuinely confused by all of this
right now.
“Of
course. Please know, since we know more….. about each other, it will change our
talks a little more, but if you can separate our work from personal, I will
too. I will also give you the name of the therapist that is highly recommended
by others with your…. Condition. If you wish to change your therapy fully to
her, I will understand, but I wish for you to know that I can continue to help
with your personal relationships. I take it this is Markus?” Dr. Mario says
quickly as he turns to lock eyes with Markus.
“Yes” I
say in utter shock that we are having this conversation out in the middle of a
public area. “This is my fiancĂ© Markus.”
“Markus,
if at some point you feel that you would like to address your feelings and your
pull toward being submissive toward”
“ENOUGH!”
I almost shout. “Not the place or the time. I will take all of this into
consideration and will contact you before our next therapy session. Okay?” I
don’t think I have ever felt like crawling into a hole as much as I do right
now.
“Alright. I look forward to
seeing you next week. However, I will let you know that your coffee is going to
get cold. I hear that Mental Spectre is headed to city hall today. Don’t worry.
Manic Mentalist will not be there, but maybe you could call….. Martial Mistress
to stop him? I could stay here with Markus and keep him company?” Dr. Mario
says with a simple shake of his head. At that moment, a blast can be heard from
downtown. “Ah, I see he is running early today. GO! While I may be on the dark
side of things, even I need a day off. I won’t cause trouble today”
“Markus?
You know….” I start
“Go
Marina. I know. For some reason…. I feel safe right now with Dr. Mario. I’ll be
alright”
As I try
to stand without seeming in a hurry to run, grabbing my bag from under the
table all I can think is that having my greatest enemy as my therapist might
not be so bad. Now, if I could just change this costume to not ride up at
inappropriate moments…. Life could be good.
